Kortright Conservation Centre:
The following speech was given by John Kiemele at Kortright Centre for Conservation, here are some highlights:
Today, I will discuss Electricity Procurement in Ontario and an overview of methods by which companies can manage their electricity costs and reduce the inherent risks existing in a very complicated market. There are three key points that I will focus on.
- Buying electricity economically is one of the most complicated, time consuming, mind-blowing, difficult and soul destroying things anyone in business can do. Those are its good points. You already know the bad points.
- Buying electricity entails incredible risks. Forget the idea that you may be able to eliminate the risks; you can’t. But, they can be reduced; not eliminated, but reduced.
- How we give help and nights of rest and sound sleeping to our many clients.
RISKS THAT EXIST WHEN BUYING POWER
There are number of what I call “Incredible Risks” that influence the hourly price you pay for your electricity.
- It is critical to understand the power bidding process and that the highest bids accepted for each hour will end up setting the price for that hour.
- Remember that those higher priced generators usually “eat” fossil fuels to generate their power.
- Also, there are times when the low cost generators such as OPG’s nuclear facilities go down for maintenance both scheduled and unplanned.
